In 80 pages of text and images the DC Street Photography Collective chronicles the indignities of everyday life with a dose of dark humor and no little empathy for all those surviving its offenses and inconveniences, both large and small.
Mixing images in a cocktail of intertwined sensibilities that range from lyrical to profane, the six members of the Collective have come together in an unusual collaboration.
“Bad Day is quietly ambitious in the question it raises: what makes for a bad day anyway?” asks Tom Mullins, collective member and author of the book’s foreword. “Humanity has suffered so many tests in this tectonic year that —while being deeply felt — are also paradoxically largely invisible. Health, environment, politics and social justice are all megascopic; too large to be seen. So how and what can photography begin to inform where words cannot?”
Bad Day chooses the small stage of personal strife. The scale is of ordinary lives colliding with ordinary interruptions and indecencies. As with the largest catastrophe, these smaller misfortunes can pull back the curtain on festering problems or a staunch resilience concealed beneath.
The book’s images, sequenced by collective member Sofía Sebastián, build in a slow crescendo, from foreboding gloom to the flaming convulsions of 2020’s riots against police brutality and systemic racism. Along the way there is ennui, apprehension, suspicion and the gallows humor that, all too often, is the only counterbalance to the vicissitudes of everyday life.
